Lola Karimova and her husband, businessman Timur Tillyaev, have been helping disadvantaged children access healthcare for almost two decades. For much of this time their work has been focused in their homeland of Uzbekistan. However, with the outbreak of the COVID virus they have began to help out in their adoptive home of California.
In 2002 the couple unveiled their first philanthropic organization, You Are Not Alone Foundation. Still in operation today, it offers a range of services. For example, they design and construct purpose-built orphanages to replace existing obsolete institutions, they provide financial and other support to keep underprivileged kids in school.
As parents themselves, Lola Karimova Tillyaeva and Timur Tillyaev have an intimate understanding of what children need to thrive. At every stage the goal is to “ensure that vulnerable children grow up in a caring and loving environment.”
Lola and Timur also offer bursaries to allow gifted students from Uzbekistan to continue their education at leading European universities. This helps the young people to kickstart their careers and contribute to the development of their communities back home.
Some of their most celebrated work by You Are Not Alone is in the sphere of health care. One great innovation was to form a partnership with French NGO, Association La Chaîne de l’Espoir (Chain of Hope). Working together You Are Not Alone Foundation was able to bring French expertise in specialized heart treatments to hundreds of disadvantaged Uzbeks with chronic cardiac conditions. In some cases, Lola and Timur also fly patients to hospitals overseas to make sure they receive the care they need.
On hearing how the State Perinatal Centre in Tashkent was struggling to provide for patients, Lola Tillyaeva and Timur Tillyaev were quick to act. They provided a range of new equipment such as x-ray systems, cardiac monitors and ultrasound machines. The impact was dramatic. As Timur Tillyaev explained, “for the past two decades my wife and I have been involved in various charity projects in Uzbekistan and internationally to support the vulnerable and to support initiatives that help people.”
In more recent times they watched in horror as the COVID pandemic raged across California. Recognizing they had a role to play, Lola Karimova Tillyaeva and Timur Tillyaev contacted a local facility to enquire what they could do. As President of UCLA Health and CEO of the UCLA Hospital System explains:
“We were facing a shortage of face shields for our front-line healthcare workers, and thanks to the kindness and generosity of the Tillyaev Family, UCLA was able to secure enough shields to equip our entire patient-facing workforce.”
Their assistance was a great boon to medical staff and patients alike. To move their relationship to a more permanent footing Timur Tillyaev has since joined the board of the UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital. Johnese Spisso, MPA and president of UCLA Health and CEO of the UCLA Hosptial System, explains how
“Tim’s dedication to improving the health of children globally is truly admirable, and we are grateful to have his leadership, active participation, and philanthropic support.”
In this way, Lola Karimova Tillyaeva and Timur Tillyaev are taking the expertise they have developed over many years and are putting it to the service of their local Californian community.
