ImageThe General Assembly of the Asian Gymnastics Union (AGU) has elected Lola Karimova-Tillyaeva the AGU’s Honorary President in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the development and promotion of gymnastics in the Asian continent.

At a meeting in Doha (Qatar) on 20 December, representatives of the 32 member-states unanimously backed and endorsed the proposal put forward by the AGU President Rahman al-Shathri on Karimova-Tillyaeva’s election as the Union’s honorary president. Rahman al- Shathri said Uzbek gymnasts’ successful participation in sports tournaments as well as efforts being made by Uzbekistan’s Gymnastics Federation have considerably contributed to raising the country’s profile on the world gymnastics stage. The Rhythmic Gymnastics Asian Championship held in Uzbekistan in 2010 is evidence of this.

Lola Karimova-Tillyaeva said that rhythmic gymnastics was getting increasingly popular across the world and highlighted Uzbekistan’s efforts in raising the profile of rhythmic gymnastics as well as promoting healthy lifestyle among the country’s young people.

The Uzbek Gymnastics Federation led by Lola Karimova-Tillyaeva was founded in 2005. Much of the Federation’s work in 2007 focused on preparations for the Beijing Olympic Games. The National School of Advanced Gymnastics and a sports complex, fitted out with state-of-the-art training facilities, were set up under the aegis of the Federation the same year to facilitate Uzbek gymnasts’ preparations for the Olympic Games.

From 2005 to 2010 the Federation’s gymnasts participated in over 50 international and nationwide competitions, where they won gold, silver and bronze medals.
