The International Forum on the social protection and integration of children with special needs was held in Tashkent on 5-6 December. The event was initiated and organized by the You are Not Alone Foundation and the National Centre for the Social Adaptation of Children (NCSAC).
The forum is an annual event, held by the You are Not Alone Foundation and the NCSAC to deal with the issues of the social protection of children with disabilities and those left without parental care. The event offers an important platform for dialogue as well as providing an opportunity for the exchange of ideas on more effective ways to work and collaborate within the field of the social protection of children in need of help.
The participants in this year’s forum furthered the objective of ensuring an inclusive and continuing education approach for children with special needs and introducing relevant amendments in this respect to existing laws and regulations; ensuring special needs children’s access to social infrastructure, transport, means of communication and information; providing young people with special needs with vocational training; providing regular training for educational specialists who work with children with special needs; stepping up collaboration between state agencies, non-government bodies and the media in order to form a positive attitude in society to people with disabilities.
The event participants produced a set of recommendations on laws in the area of the social protection of children brought up in state orphanages, as well as issues of special needs education and the social adaptation of children with disabilities, vocational training for adolescents with special needs with a view to helping in their transition to adulthood.
The forum was organised in partnership with the Public Education Ministry, the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Specialized Education, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, the Ministry of Culture and Sports, the Finance Ministry, the Council of the Federation of Trade Unions, the representative office of UNICEF in Uzbekistan, the Kamolot youth movement, the Tashkent city mayor’s office, the Public foundation for supporting NGOs and other civil society institutions under the Uzbek parliament. It was attended by local and foreign experts in the field of the social protection of children.
The You are Not Alone Foundation was founded by Lola Karimova-Tillyaeva in 2002 to provide comprehensive assistance and support to children left without parental care. The charity’s primary goals are to promote progress among orphaned and abandoned children and to provide them with better access to comprehensive education, as well as to offer assistance in healthcare and psychological support.
The National Centre for the Social Adaptation of Children is a charitable organization founded by Lola Karimova-Tillyaeva in 2004 to provide assistance in the areas of diagnosis, orthopaedic and neurological treatment, speech therapy and education to children with disabilities.
