At the invitation of the You are Not Alone charitable Foundation, a group of French medical experts – members of the Association “La Chaine de l’Espoir”- visited Tashkent on 12-18 December to examine, consult and perform surgery on children with complex congenital heart diseases. As part of the charity campaign, the French doctors examined children from Mercy Homes (orphanages) and low-income families, as well as children with disabilities who receive therapy at the National Centre for the Social Adaptation of Children.
All the medical check-ups and surgeries were carried out at the State Specialized Surgery Centre in Tashkent by a team of French doctors, comprising cardiac surgeon Olivier Baron, perfusionist Louis Merian, anaesthesiologist Ariane Dewind and intensive care unit nurse Eleonore Leguenec, jointly with the surgeons of Uzbekistan’s State Specialized Surgery Centre.
In 2013 the You are Not Alone Foundation renovated and refurbished four operating theatres of the State Surgery Centre, providing them with the new, state-of-the-art medical equipment, thanks to which it is now possible to perform the most complex cardiac operations there.
Having examined the children, the cardiac surgeons decided to operate on eight children suffering from life-threatening congenital heart conditions. Four of these extremely complex open-heart operations, including the Nikaidoh procedure, were performed for the first time in Uzbekistan.
The surgical procedures lasted several hours each and were performed with the use of vascular prostheses and synthetic patches.
The children are now recovering in the intensive care unit of the State Specialized Surgery Centre.
This is the second charity campaign which the You are Not Alone Foundation has organised jointly with the Association “La Chaine de l’Espoir”.
During their earlier visit to Tashkent in July 2015, French experts examined and provided consultations to about 40 children from Mercy Homes and low-income families, as well as children with disabilities.
The You are Not Alone Foundation was founded by Lola Karimova-Tillyaeva in 2002 to provide comprehensive assistance and support to children left without parental care. The charity’s primary goals are to promote progress among orphaned and abandoned children and to provide them with better access to comprehensive education, as well as to offer assistance in healthcare and psychological support.
The National Centre for the Social Adaptation of Children is a charitable organization founded by Lola Karimova-Tillyaeva in 2004 to provide assistance in the areas of diagnosis, orthopaedic and neurological treatment, speech therapy and education to children with disabilities.
