Timur Tillyaev and his wife Lola Karimova Tillyaeva, have the best part of twenty years association with a variety of philanthropic organizations. Though a successful businessman in the competitive world of international logistics, Timur Tillyaev always finds the time to contribute to charitable causes that are important to him.
An important focus area for both Lola and Timur is education. Both benefited from having the opportunity to pursue higher education, including at institutions abroad, and it is a privilege they are keen to share with others. Though a native of Uzbekistan, Timur Tillyaev won a place to attend high school and university in the USA, where he took a degree in liberal arts at Midland University in Nebraska. Lola Tillyaeva attained a master’s degree in international law from the University of World Economy and Diplomacy and a doctorate in psychology from the Tashkent State University. This background that gave both a deep appreciation for the important role education plays in a young person’s life and led them to found The Karimov Foundation in 2016.
As Timur’s webpage explains: “While the Foundation is dedicated to a number of different goals – including the promotion of Uzbek arts and culture – education is one of the organization’s top priorities.”
The foundation provides a scholarship program which supports high-achieving students to attain postgraduate education at renowned international institutions. Asidde from paying tuition fees, the scholarship scheme helps pair students with their ideal courses and universities and supports students throughout the experience. More than 30 talented Uzbek students have now achieved Master’s degrees in areas spanning renewable energy to fine arts from universities in Germany, Italy, France, the UK and more.
After completing their degrees, the scholarship recipients return to Uzbekistan in order to apply their skills to their home country. Timur and Lola see this as a means of ensuring that the emerging generation in Uzbekistan are well-placed to contribute to their nation’s development and prosperity.
Another NGO operated by the couple is the You Are Not Alone foundation. Founded in 2002, it’s the couple’s longest running organization. The foundation provides homes, education and healthcare to Uzbek children in need. From designing and constructing purpose-built facilities for the care of orphans to programs aimed at keeping disadvantaged kids in school, You Are Not Alone has ensured thousands of children and young adults receive opportunities they would otherwise have gone without.
From 2004-2020, Lola Tillyaev and Timur Tillyaeva launched and supported the National Centre for the Social Adaption of Children (NCSAC). This center, which is unique in Central Asia, provides medical and educational assistance to children with disabilities and learning difficulties. It offers a range of critical services such as diagnosis, orthopaedic and neurological treatment, speech therapy and education – all free of charge. NCSAC also supports their families. It also provides counselling and financial advice to families. It’s a sad reality that some mothers experience bullying or rejection from their husbands or families due to their child’s condition. In this way, Timur Tillyaev and Lola Karimova Tillyaeva have helped make sure that, “every child with special needs who comes to the Centre for therapy attains his or her full potential.”
